My heart sunk when she told me about seeing a new dress hanging in the country store. It was pink with big bows and looked so pretty in light. I knew that the story bought dress that I had been dreaming about must have been sold. The news dashed my hopes of getting one. I decided that I would just not go to the dance. None of my dresses seemed pretty enough to wear. It nearly broke my heart. Two days passed and I needed to make a trip to the country store to pick up much needed supplies. I dreaded the trip since it had just snowed the night before. The creek would be frozen over which would make the trip ever harder. I bundled up Camilla and we headed off to the store. Arriving at the store with its lights so bright, I headed to the potbelly stove to warm up my hands and feet. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied the pretty pink dress. Oh how I had wished that the seemingly ‘plain’ dress hanging for so long on that very form was still there. It was at that time I remembered what pappy used to say, “don’t worry, something good will come along, just you wait and see!”. While that didn’t help me feel any better, it did help to hurry me along with my shopping. Flour, cornmeal, lard, sugar, and some new needles , was placed in the paper bag as I handed over my money to Gladys June, the store clerk. I started to pick up my bundle when Mr. Perry called out from the back. He handed me a small package tied in a string. I was not sure what it was and when I tried to tell him that I didn’t order anything, he just smiled, clucked like a chicken, and hurried away. He turned back around and said, “wait until you get home to open that package.”
