The Country Peddler
"My name is Edmond Simms and I am a Country Peddler. |
My name is Edmond Simms and I am from Culpepper, Va. I am a Peddler by trade but a giver of wonderful delights. Growing up in Culpepper allowed me to see many things that came from all over the Eastern Part of the country. I remember my father telling me that “most of the Peddler’s junk was not worth much”. After seeing several travel through our town, I knew what I wanted to do. I saved all the money I could after doing odd jobs to get my wagon. When it came time to start my first trip, all I had to sell was three old clocks, one bolt of fabric given to me by Aunt Jane, and 4 bottles of Snake Oil. I decided to pick up some remaining items along the way. I had to learn how to wheel and deal but always in the back of my mind I knew I had to be honest. Being the fifth of twelve children, trading around to get what you need comes easy for me. My travels took me from Culpepper to about 15 miles south of Holderby Landing. The clang clang of the iron pots along with clip clopping of miss Mary, my trusty house announces my arrival. Pulling up with a loaded buggy always brings out the folks along the way.
