Sometimes I wonder just why we came across the mountains but when I watch my husband plow the land and feed our family, I would not change a thing. life is hard but with family and friends, it seems much easier. As long as we work together as a family and continue to focus on what is important, we will make it. My biggest worry now is for my children. Three young children out in the middle of nowhere never gets any easier. Just the other day, I had to get Issy and Willy out of Hickory Creek before they could be swept away. Another time, I caught Abe running towards the door. He didn’t have a stick of clothes on and it was in the dead of winter. My time is now spent looking after the children, washing clothes down by the creek, and cooking. Each day comes with new experiences. I have to be nurse, schoolmarm, hunter, cook, and maker of clothes. my day begins early when Jonas and Luke go out to the field, through cooking and cleaning, and ending at nights end after getting the children tucked in. There is little time for Jonas and I to spend time alone together. While at time it is hard and life seems to hand us a different problem, we will survive. I would not have it any other way. Next year I am going to begin spinning yarn and learning how to weave. Luke build me a lumen for the back porch. Life never gets boring and with three children, two adult males and of course, Raccoon, the trapper, we don’t worry about company. I must say that after three years, I would not want to change much. with winter setting in, I need to get some of our meat salted and dried out. Just another day.
