My name is Boomer and love taking care of our bee hives. I remember my first contact with a bee. I was playing up the holler with my friend Jake. We found some sweet sticky stuff on an old tree standing in the woods. I took a stick and poked it in the hole. Like most boys, I licked it off the stick. It tasted wonderful and we wanted more. I poked the stick back in the hole and that was when I got to meet the bee's that lived there. We both got stung several times as we ran towards the creek to jump in. That encounter made me want to learn more about the bees and how they make honey.
We had a series of wooden frames within a rectangular hive box. The bees would build parallel honeycombs in the box without bonding them to each other or to the hive walls. We could then remove the comb and honey. A smoker is used to puff smoke into the entrance before opening the hive and blow smoke over the frames after the hive is opened. Smoke causes the bees to gorge themselves with honey; then they are much gentler. Smoke must be used carefully.
